I Can Do the Hard Things

It took me too many years to be willing to forgive myself. I would like for others to know, for you to know, that "You can do the hard things."

I keep coming back to this thought today, “I can do hard things.”
Life puts me in these moments
where I could walk away and still be okay.
No one would blame me.
But there’s also the option to walk straight into the thing I’d rather avoid.
Sometimes the hard thing looks small to everyone else.
Just words.
Just a conversation.
Just saying what I feel.
But…it doesn’t feel small in my body.
It feels heavy.
Like my heart knows what it wants to say, but my voice needs time to catch up.
Some hard things come from love.
And even then, they can hurt.
Sometimes they hurt me.
Sometimes I hurt someone else.
That doesn’t mean they were wrong.
It just means they were hard.
Forgiveness is hard.
And forgiving myself, well that might be the hardest part.
I don’t always get there quickly.
Sometimes I circle it for a while before I’m ready.
I can do hard things, but I need time.
And I’m learning to let that be okay, in me, and in others.
I’m also realizing that when someone says a hard thing to me, it may have taken more courage than I’ll ever know.
Sometimes people speak because holding it in became heavier than the risk of saying it.
I don’t think doing hard things means being fearless.
I think it means being willing.
And today…
willing is enough.
