The Archetype of the Awakened Child
Sharing a little piece from my upcoming book, More Than Existing: Reclaimed, with you this morning. As I had two experiences that, at one time, would have triggered what I used to believe was defensiveness. Yet through emotional healing and finally finding the words for what was happening within me, I could recognize what had always been hiding beneath that reaction, embarrassment—a deeply rooted, unconscious sense of embarrassment I had never known how to name.
It is astonishing how differently we meet ourselves when we finally understand the emotion beneath the emotion.
“The child who once disappeared within herself to survive will eventually return to that same place and discover that it was never empty; it was home.”
-Corrie
Being born “awake” does not simply make you wise beyond your years, or turn you into an adult while you are still a teenager; it can make you deeply insecure, create doubt and cause you to question yourself in the most unimaginable ways.
When you can see beyond what others perceive as normal or acceptable, yet constantly hear, “You’re foolish,” you eventually stop questioning the world around you and begin questioning yourself.
Finding peace by accepting the unacceptable may have helped you survive for years, but it was never truly peaceful, because accepting what your soul knew was wrong created patterns and habits that would not be so easy to break.
Trusting yourself, your instincts and your intuition became almost impossible, and in place of that trust, you may have become reactive, resentful and, at the root of it all, deeply sad, walking through the world feeling embarrassed without ever fully understanding what you were embarrassed about.
Perhaps you were embarrassed by the intensity of what you felt, ashamed of what you noticed, or afraid that speaking what you knew would once again make you the foolish one. Shameful of being you is not a peaceful place to exist within your own heart and mind.
For the “gifted child,” shame often begins when their knowing becomes inconvenient to the people around them. The child sees what no one wants acknowledged, feels what others are trying to conceal and questions what everyone else has agreed to accept.
When that child is continually dismissed, corrected or laughed at, they do not stop seeing the truth; they simply learn to distrust the one who sees it.
And that is where the deepest wound may begin, not in being different, but in being taught that being yourself was somehow wrong.
For the “gifted child,” learning that the safest place to exist is within can become entangled with the belief that the safest way to be accepted is to be of service to others. Giving the gift away continuously creates an illusion of belonging, because there is always a place for the person who can see what others cannot, carry what others will not, or create what others need. Yet somehow, they are rarely standing on the inside of the circle; they remain on the outside, offering their wisdom through the opening, or watching someone else reap the rewards of a creative expression that could only have come through them.
It is a peculiar way to exist in the world, to be valued for the gift while still feeling ashamed of the person carrying it, to be welcomed for what you provide while never feeling fully welcomed as yourself. But trust me, that gifted child will find their way, not by finally earning a place inside the circle, but by realizing their gift was never meant to become the price of admission.
The child who once disappeared within herself to survive will eventually return to that same place and discover that it was never empty; it was home.
This time, she will not come back to hide, she will come back to reclaim everything she was taught to give away.
She was never foolish; she was simply awake before the people around her were ready to see.
😘You keep walking your inner child stories all the way to the truth. Reclaiming…
