Breaking the Chains of Hidden Hate: The Journey Back to Self-Love

We often hear people say, “I have no regrets.” But when the heart is still heavy with resentment, judgment, or hidden hate - is that truly possible? Because if our emotions are not neutralized, if we still carry a charge of anger or bitterness, doesn’t that reveal a lingering regret, even if it’s buried under layers of pride or defense? I’ve witnessed this contradiction in others, and within myself, the paradox of claiming freedom while still being bound by unhealed emotion.

Hate is sneaky and hate can begin from a desire to love. Hate is a powerful and deceptive energy. It’s often disguised as something it’s not. It doesn’t always look like rage, sometimes, it disguises itself as indifference, criticism, or self-righteousness. It can even wear the mask of “love.” Smiling politely while quietly eroding the trust and connection underneath.

In a dream last night, I was shown strings of hate, threads of energy moving through time and relationships, whispering that hate often hides behind masks. They told me there could be no joy if there was still a part of me that secretly hated myself. Parts of myself still holding onto projections.

“I don’t hate myself,” I argued.

But then, I felt my defensiveness rise. That tight, protective energy that signals a deeper truth wanting to be seen. Old threads that have resolved some deep truths, but what lingers disguised. Maybe I am still a little hard on myself who knows, but the dream had a truth that stayed with me when I awakened. When the light becomes the mirror, compassion speaks a truth.

Above me, a light appeared, showing me how often I had placed trust in places where hate still existed. How often I had given my love to others while withholding it from myself, hoping that being liked or accepted would somehow heal the wound. That revelation was humbling. But it was also liberating in the reality of the dream. It wasn’t aggressive, because self-hate doesn’t always roar. Sometimes, it hides beneath perfectionism, people-pleasing, or the ache to be understood. It’s an old and deep thread that tells us love must be earned, instead of remembered.

“Love Moves Through the Heart” is a truth, but if the mind can create a belief than what one doesn’t understand becomes fear turned to projected hate. Love moves through the heart; hate moves through the mind. When the mind carries hate, it creates stories, judgments, and reactions. When the heart carries love, it creates compassion, forgiveness, and peace.

The journey back to self-love is not about pretending that hate never existed. It’s about acknowledging where it originates from, has lived and choosing to release it. It’s about walking ourselves out of the story of betrayal, rejection, and regret, and into the truth that love was never gone, it was just waiting for us to return home.

So now I ask myself, and you… What would it feel like to love yourself as deeply as you love others? Who would you become if every thread of hate was transformed into light? How would your reflection change if you finally saw yourself through the same eyes of love you’ve always offered the world? I don’t have all the answers, but I do know this: Self-love is not the end of the journey, it’s the return to the beginning. It’s where the chains fall away, and the heart finally becomes free.

More Than Existing™ Reflection invites you to ask yourself these questions:

  • Where have I confused love with approval?

  • What part of me still defends old wounds instead of healing them?

  • How can I act in self-love today?

  • Where might I still be carrying someone else’s hate as my own?
