You Were Never Responsible for Everyone Else's Happiness
One of the most important things I want you to recognize is that, as a child, you were never responsible for the emotional happiness of the adults around you.
You were not meant to become the parent to your parent. You were not responsible for repairing their relationships, managing their fears, or carrying the weight of their disappointments.
Yet many of us learned to take on these responsibilities without even realizing what we were doing.
Perhaps you became the peacemaker, the caretaker, the child who never complained, or the one who continually apologized because you believed it was your responsibility to keep everyone happy.
And perhaps those same behaviours are still present in your life today.
How often do you apologize for expressing your needs?
How often do you feel guilty for making yourself a priority?
How often do you take responsibility for another person's disappointment, anger, or unhappiness?
There is a difference between being accountable for our actions and assuming responsibility for the emotional experiences of everyone around us.
Part of healing is learning to recognize that difference.
