When the Mess Reveals the Heart

When the Mess Reveals the Heart

I am not sure where to start, or better yet, I am uncertain which words to begin with, but as I sit here with one finger suspended above the keyboard and another resting on a letter, I realize just how many thoughts are flowing through my head.

Judgement is so easy when it is passed off as only an opinion. It is easy to see how wrong or messy another person is living their life when, in your mind, their life does not resemble the version you believe looks well put together.

My quiet world has been turned upside down this past week and, compared with the calm that usually exists in my life, it has been chaotic. There was a time when I would have been unconsciously bothered by this shift, when my ego would have created stories about how this should not be happening or why things should be different, but this 55-year-old version of me, who has now walked around the block more than a few times, has been experiencing something far removed from those old thoughts.

Within this busy and chaotic dynamic, I see love and empathy, and I see heroes. I see resilience, strength, courage and kindness. I see people I love who are all heart, people who are compassionate and kind, who have filled my space and my home with vibrancy, carrying hearts that may be scared but remain open to discovering what comes next.

There have been big emotions reaching every corner of the emotional scale, yet somehow, in the end, everything and every moment keeps returning to love.

This week I found myself standing in a circle on a dirt road, not a planned circle, not in silence and certainly not holding hands in Kumbaya mode, but in a circle created by compassion.

We had found an owl that had been struck by a vehicle and was taking its final breaths. There we were, a group of everyday human beings from several generations, doing everything we could to save this beautiful creature, then staying with it when there was nothing more we could do, holding it and crying in our own ways as it took its last breath.

I would never call what happened to that owl a blessing, but there was something sacred in what I witnessed among the people gathered around it. We could not save the owl, but it did not die alone. It left this world surrounded by tenderness, and my heart was full as I witnessed the empathy and love that revealed who these people I love truly are at their core.

Not who they appear to be when life is tidy, not who someone assumes they are from the outside, but who they become when something vulnerable is suffering in front of them.

It is easy to judge what we do not understand. It is easy to have an opinion, but it is not always easy to recognize how judgemental all of us can become when others are not living life the way we imagined they should.

When I look beyond appearances, beyond the noise, the chaos and the mess, what I see are heroes, ordinary people courageously moving forward in the best way they know how, loving imperfectly, feeling deeply and showing up when it matters.

Perhaps a well-put-together life is not one that always appears calm from the outside. Perhaps it is one that, no matter how chaotic it becomes, continues to find its way back to a life lived doing what is morally right and not inside the lines of the egos comfort.

Much love,
