The Difference Between Chasing Purpose and Living On Purpose
“Your purpose isn’t your job. It isn’t your title, it isn’t even your gifts. Your purpose is the quality of consciousness you bring into whatever life asks of you.”
Corrie Thorne-Cameron
This week we move into the energy of Gene Key 39, and although many will be looking for signs, waiting for clarity or searching for the next piece of their purpose, I find myself sitting with something very different. Perhaps the greatest misunderstanding we have about purpose is believing it is something we must chase, discover or finally arrive at. We spend years looking over the next hill, convinced that one day life will reveal the answer, all the while missing the quiet truth that purpose has never been asking us to find it. It has been asking us to become conscious enough to live it.
There is a profound difference between living for purpose and living from purpose. One leaves us constantly searching for the life we believe we are meant to have. The other gently calls us back into the life we already have, asking us to meet it with greater awareness, deeper integrity and a willingness to stop abandoning ourselves.
Purpose is not your career. It is not your title, your gifts, your accomplishments or the number of people who know your name. Those things may become expressions of your purpose, but they are not purpose itself. Purpose is the quality of consciousness you bring into every conversation, every decision, every relationship and every ordinary moment that quietly shapes your life. It is less about what you are doing and far more about who you are becoming while you are doing it.
When we live disconnected from that place, something is always exchanged. We trade our presence for distraction. We trade our truth for acceptance. We trade our peace for productivity and our authenticity for the approval we hope will finally convince us we are enough. Over time, these trades become so familiar that we no longer recognize what they have cost us. We call it being busy, we call it responsibility and we call it life. Yet somewhere beneath all of that, something within us quietly whispers, There must be more than this.
Perhaps that whisper is not asking you to find your purpose at all. Perhaps it is asking you to stop living everything that isn’t.
Gene Key 39 carries the energy of provocation, and I have often found that life’s greatest provocations are not punishments. They are invitations. They disturb what has become comfortable but no longer true. They expose the identities we have outgrown, the beliefs that have quietly limited us and the stories that once protected us but now keep us from fully living. We often ask why life feels uncomfortable, while life is gently asking why we continue trying to fit inside a version of ourselves that no longer belongs.
Living within your purpose requires breaking up with everything you are not.
It asks you to loosen your grip on the identities that were built through survival instead of truth. To question the roles you accepted because they kept the peace. To lovingly release the beliefs that taught you your worth depended upon being useful, agreeable or endlessly proving yourself. Purpose has very little interest in helping us become more impressive. It is far more interested in helping us become more honest.
My Purpose Gene Key is 39, Line 5—the line of Voice, and perhaps that is why this week’s energy feels so personal to me. Finding my voice was never about becoming louder or learning to speak more confidently. It was about healing the places within me that believed silence was safer than truth. It required walking away from the versions of myself that constantly edited what I knew, softened what I felt and searched outside myself for permission to trust what had always lived within me.
Your voice is not simply the words that leave your mouth. Your voice is the life your choices speak every single day. Every boundary is a sentence and every act of courage becomes a paragraph. Every moment you choose integrity over performance tells the world something about who you are. Long before anyone hears your words, they have already felt your voice through the way you exist.
As we move through this week, you may notice life provoking you. Restlessness may surface. Frustration may rise. You may find yourself questioning where you are going or wondering why something no longer fits. Before believing something has gone wrong, consider that perhaps nothing is falling apart. Perhaps consciousness is simply asking for a little more room than your old life can provide.
The life that is meant for you will always ask for the real you.
Purpose has never been waiting for you somewhere in the future. It has been patiently waiting beneath every mask you have worn, every role you have outgrown and every story you have mistaken for your identity. The moment you stop releasing your energy into everything you are not, purpose quietly stops becoming something you chase and becomes the place from which you choose, create, love, speak and live.
The opposite of purpose is not failure. It is existing without ever truly being present for your own life.
It is waking each morning believing that purpose is somewhere else, somewhere ahead of you, while quietly trading away the only place it has ever existed, the way you choose to live this moment.
Purpose has never asked you to become someone different. Nope…It has only ever asked you to stop pretending to be someone you are not.
The moment you stop trading your truth for acceptance, your voice for approval and your presence for endless striving, purpose quietly returns and not because it was ever lost, but because you have finally come home to yourself.
Perhaps that is what Gene Key 39 has been provoking all along. Not what your future looks like but your willingness to live consciously enough to meet your own life.
Because the opposite of purpose is not failure. It is existing without ever truly being present for your own life. It’s the life that’s forever feeding the hungry ghost you refuse to starve out. That’s f***ing exhausting!
