Don’t be the one who never questions. It’s important to look around, most of all it’s okay!
Seeing something that’s been on repeat that you didn’t see before? it’s so easy, isn’t it, to live inside what’s familiar. To belong so deeply you stop noticing the shape of the cage. The same thoughts, the same roles, the same responses pulled from memory like well-worn scripts… so practiced they feel like you. And maybe that’s the strangest thing… how natural the rehearsed life becomes.
We learn it so young. The child who fits in is called “good.” The child who asks too many questions becomes “difficult.” The one who can’t accept, because, “I said so” becomes the problem. But the truth is… the family doesn’t end. It just changes costumes, it moves into your groups, your tribe of friends, the workplace… It’s easy if we all just agree and stay being the same version without change.
We grow up and join new rooms, new circles, new identities, new tribes. Even rebellion can become a tribe. Even difference can become a uniform. And this is where the spiral turns…
In Spiral Dynamics, (created by Don Beck and Chris Cowan, based on the work of Clare W Graves and his work called the “Theory of Levels of Human Existence”), we learn that human beings move through waves of belonging, certainty, achievement, justice, freedom… each level a lens, each stage a home, each home, eventually too small. And the real courage? It isn’t always loud. It isn’t always war. Sometimes courage is the softest thing… the moment you stop performing, the moment you stop needing agreement, the moment you choose something truer than what you were trained to repeat. Because when everyone is nodding, something may be missing. And when everyone is screaming, no one is listening for what’s underneath.
So today, and throughout the month, the guides invite us to just sit with this: “Where have you been living on autopilot? Where have you been loyal to a script you never consciously chose?” Not as a way to shame or analyze, but just noticing. Just breathing through, Just the spiral asking you… to move through the language that begins with I, We, Them…
What would it feel like to live one inch more awake? The silent observer, who is not quiet or passive but certain in knowing that his/her thoughts are created from the neutral highest point. Imagine living life unrehearsed…
